Komen 3-Day an incredible success.

October 18th, 2008 by tonyc

Pictures posted in the album. Many, many thanks to Patricia, Cassandra, and all the Tri-State Valley Girls for this wonderful accomplishment. It was a wonderful day at the Komen cheering station. After 4 hours, I had to leave, but the Walk was still in progress. Amazing. About 99% were female, and 99% were smiling, some were in obvious discomfort, but all were encouraged by the cheering.

See below for more info including the link to the Team members.

Komen effort in Colorado by Sally - please donate

August 27th, 2008 by tonyc

Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know this has been quite a challenging year. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and also found out that she carries the mutation on the BRAC2 gene. She had a double mastectomy in July and fortunately I was able to be there to help care for her and support her. Her prognosis is very good as the cancer was contained and not invasive. I struggled with my own fears and found out that I do not carry the same mutation as my sister and so I do not have to have the prophylactic double mastectomy. I feel blessed to have dodged the surgery but I feel keenly the loss of my mother and my best friend from breast cancer. The experience with my sister’s diagnosis has certainly caused me to renew my vow to fight breast cancer in the way that I feel able to, walking and raising money.

I believe in the Susan G. Komen foundation they have financially supported all of the major breakthroughs in the treatment of breast cancer in the last 20 years. I was a direct beneficiary of one of their community grants in that it paid for my consultation with a nationally accredited genetics counselor for my genetic testing.

I recently accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure® on September 7, 2008 in the fight against breast cancer. One in eight women will be stricken with breast cancer in her lifetime and the more we raise, the more the Colorado Springs Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure can fund vital breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in our community and support the national search for a cure.

Please join me in the fight by pledging in support of my participation in the Race or contributing generously to the Komen Colorado Springs Race for the Cure®. Your tax-deductible contribution will fund innovative outreach and awareness programs for medically underserved persons in El Paso, Pueblo and Teller counties and national breast cancer research. It’s faster and easier than ever to support this great cause - you can make a donation online by simply clicking on the link at the bottom of this message. If you would prefer, you can also send your tax-deductible contribution to the address listed below. Whatever you can give will help! I truly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress.

Thank you so much for your time and support in the fight against breast cancer! Every step counts! And keep me in mind for next year as the 3-Day Breast Cancer walk will be in Denver in 2009 and I plan on walking my sixty miles again!!! Maybe I can recruit a few of you to join me!
Sincerely,

Sallette/Sally Thompson Benavidez

Turbo 1986-2008

July 12th, 2008 by tonyc

As you may know, Turbo had colic surgery on his small intestines July 1. He had some good days and some bad on the days that followed. Yesterday, he began to actively colic again. They believe a portion of his intestines had it’s blood supply compromised. They believe no horse would survive 2 resectionings, and I wouldn’t have put him through a second surgery anyway. He was put down yesterday evening.

I acquired Turbo while I was in college as an unbroken 2 yr old. I even threw myself a “baby shower” for him (you know me, any excuse for a party). I was so happy that my childhood dream of owning a horse came true. He was always a bit impish, too smart for his own good, and loved to move out on the trail, but he was such a good boy and so much fun!

There’s so much to thank him for. Over the past 20 years, we’ve had many great times together, I’ve made so many wonderful friendships owing him, and being at the barn with him would always wash away my stress of the day.

I’m going to miss him so much. I can’t even imagine…..

A nice memory shared from Sally

January 26th, 2008 by tonyc

Very cool!!! I was remembering South Dakota now. When I drove down before I went to grad school Patti met me in Madison WI at her friend’s house. I remember calling her saying I’m starting through South Dakota and then calling her the next morning and saying I’m still in South Dakota and her saying, “You’re still in freakin’ South Dakota my god how big is that state?”. That was one of our our greatest road trips. I was looking back over the journal we kept of the drive between Madison and Philly it was funny we had such a blast talking on the cb radio. When I came through Sturgiss SD before I got to Madison they were holding the biker rally and whenever I stopped to get a meal or anything they would seat you with whoever because the restaurants were so full. I met a lot of cool people. I still can’t believe I drove from Fairbanks Alaska to Madison WI by myself and camped in Canada, what was I thinking?

I really like hearing about your travels. Patti really got the travel bug from you. I loved to travel with her because she was always so good at finding the coolest non-touristy stuff (like cool restaurants or beautiful sites) and the tourist stuff too. We always had so much fun playing stupid word games in the car, just everything was fun and we laughed so much. I really miss her laugh. I always said you could lock Patti and I in a closet and we would find a way to have a good time. Travel well. Love ya, Sal
